What is suar wood? The Indonesian rain tree
Suar — Samanea saman, the rain tree, sometimes sold as monkey pod — is the great shade tree of Java. It grows fast and enormously wide, which is precisely why it matters here: a century-old suar trunk yields dining-width slabs that oak and walnut simply cannot give from one tree.
The timber is dense, with an interlocked grain that holds a wide slab stable and takes a glass-smooth polish. It reaches maturity in around twenty years and is replanted continuously — extraordinary wood, responsibly taken.

Why a single slab matters
Most “live edge” tables are two or three boards glued along their length, with the join running through the middle of the grain. A single slab has no join to fail, no seam for the eye to catch, and a grain story that runs unbroken from one live edge to the other. It is the difference between a picture of a tree and the tree itself.

Is suar wood good for a dining table?
Exceptionally. Suar is a dense tropical hardwood that grows wide enough to yield a full dining top from a single slab — no joins, no veneers — and its interlocked grain keeps a big slab remarkably stable. Every Kayuko slab is kiln-dried and sealed, so it stands up to daily family use.
Does suar wood crack?
Any solid slab of wood moves with the seasons, and suar is better behaved than most: its interlocked grain resists the splitting that plagues straight-grained species at this width. Our slabs are kiln-dried to furniture moisture content before finishing, and the sealed finish slows moisture exchange further. Small character checks in the grain are stabilised, not hidden.
Is suar the same as monkey pod or rain tree wood?
Yes — suar, monkey pod, rain tree and acacia-style trade names all describe the same species, Samanea saman (also written Albizia saman). It is the broad shade tree planted across Indonesia; the width of its canopy is what makes single-slab dining tables possible.
How do I care for a suar wood table?
Very little is asked of you. Every table carries a sealed PU and melamine finish, so spills wipe away with a damp cloth and no oiling routine is ever needed. Use trivets under hot pans, keep it out of relentless direct sun, and it will outlast you. The full guidance lives in our care guide.
